Williamsburg/James City County Coalition for Community Justice

Pursuing equity and justice in all aspects of the legal system

We seek to dismantle systemic racism in the courts, police, schools, and other institutions within our community that lead to the school-to-prison pipeline, racial profiling, the excessive use of force, excessive pretrial detention and sentencing, and the criminalization of poverty.

We are local individuals and organizations working for change and we hope you’ll join us!

Civilian Oversight Boards

Independent community oversight boards are an important measure in fostering police accountability and transparency. Our priority is the establishment of oversight boards for the Williamsburg and James City County police departments.

Court Watch

Our court watch program monitors our local courts to increase transparency in our court system and combat mass incarceration. Court watch volunteers are in the courtroom every day collecting data for issue analysis and advocacy. This data helps identify racial and economic disparities and tracks the unjust use of secured bond.

Advocacy

Much of what happens in our legal system is controlled by local, state, and national policies and laws. We work with partner organizations to advocate for more equitable laws and programs.

“The fate of millions of people—indeed the future of the black community itself—may depend on the willingness of those who care about racial justice to re-examine their basic assumptions about the role of the criminal justice system in our society.”
— Michelle Alexander, Author
